Fears and Phobias
Fear is an emotional and physical response to threats and danger. Many fears are rational and can help prevent us from coming to harm.
Phobias are irrational fears of varying intensity and a form of anxiety disorder. They often interfere with normal activities and affect our day to day lives severely and disproportionally.
Excessive nervousness of for example, exams, public speaking or driving tests to paralysing terror at the sight of a spider can be greatly reduced and usually elimated completely.
Some of the more common phobias are:
- Spiders (arachnophobia)
- Flying (pteromerhanophobia)
- Public speaking (glossophobia)
- Needles (aichmophobia)
- Agoraphobia
- Driving
- Frogs (batrachophobia)
- Heights (acrophobia)
- Socialising
- Dentists (dentophobia)
- Claustrophobia
- Exams and more…..
Phobias are extremely common. Many people believe that they are a fact of life yet they need not be.
More than 1 in 10 children suffer from specific phobias, for example of spiders or dogs or of socialising. In many cases these phobias interfere greatly with day to day activities.
A phobic reaction is disproportionate and sustained.
Most of us will get into a lift without worrying, deal with injections or blood tests easily, enjoy meeting a friendly dog, look forward to a day out etc but in many people things that others take for granted and even enjoy, will create an uncontrollable fear and a physical reaction which becomes a huge daily problem for them
