Symptoms of Depression
Many people do not recognise the symptoms of depressive illness. Often, people simply don’t expect depression to manifest physically.
If you suffer from more than a couple of the following symptoms, depression is one of the possible causes.
- tiredness, lethargy, low energy, heaviness of limbs
- sleep problems - difficulty in getting to sleep, waking in the early hours, over-sleeping
- aches and pains, headaches, stomach cramps persistent sadness
- loss or increase of appetite
- difficulty in concentrating and working
- loss of self-confidence or self-esteem
- loss of libido
- undue feelings of guilt, helplessness or hopelessness
- avoidance of others, even close friends
- loss of interest in general
- feelings of paranoia or irrational fear
- irritability or mood swings
- a desire for a return to a past state
- thoughts of suicide or death
- self-harm
